Women of Impact - Brooke Daniels

It’s essential that we demonstrate to our attorneys that there’s a path forward and the potential for a long career for women who want to pursue it.

As co-leader of Pillsbury’s Women’s Impact Network, why do you think it’s important that law firms increase the number of women partners and women leaders?

Diversity, in general, is incredibly important because it ensures that you have a variety of different points of view and experiences. Being able to provide diverse views means that clients are getting the strongest, most well-round legal advice and business guidance. The benefits ripple out from there.

Having women in leadership and partnership roles within the firm sets an example internally that Pillsbury is willing to invest in its people. It’s essential that we demonstrate to our attorneys that there’s a path forward and the potential for a long career for women who want to pursue it. It also signals externally to the marketplace that we put our money where our mouth is—Pillsbury puts women in leadership positions and gives them opportunities to grow and thrive.

As you’ve advanced in your career, what challenges have you overcome that are unique to being a woman and a parent?

There are a lot more interests competing for my time now than before I was a parent. It’s that dreaded mental trap where you feel everyone is getting underserved. To combat this feeling, I don’t procrastinate, and I do my best to delegate the smaller stuff. That way, I can focus on those things that are most important and get them taken care of right away. It’s a small indulgence, but I order groceries to be delivered about once a week. A weekend is only two days, and I don’t want to spend half a day in the frozen food aisle.

How does Pillsbury fare in recruiting women and advancing them to partnership and leadership roles?

I started at Pillsbury as a summer associate and have been here my entire career. I think that speaks to the strong culture and community of the firm, and in particular the support within the Global Sourcing group. I’ve had many mentors over the years—too many to name.

Pillsbury also does a good job of supporting new parents by recognizing the importance of having a transition period both before you go out on leave and when you come back. That helps minimize the stress and disruptions for people who are starting a family.
