Julia Belcher is a dispute resolution special counsel based in Pillsbury’s London office, focusing on international arbitration.

Julia has substantial experience in complex international disputes, having advised clients in various jurisdictions (in particular, CIS and MENA) and industries (including energy, construction, petrochemicals and financial services). Julia has advised clients under the best known arbitration rules (LCIA, ICC, SCC, DIAC, UNCITRAL) and conducts her own advocacy at arbitration hearings. She also has experience in investor-state disputes and in international litigation, primarily arbitration related (interim relief, enforcement).

Representative Experience

  • Advised on DIAC arbitration involving claims and counterclaims of around US$1 billion each, arising out of breaches of a share sale and purchase agreement. This complex dispute involved issues of UAE and other Gulf region laws.
  • Advising on LCIA arbitration involving claims arising out of a failure to perform share put option agreements in relation to shares in a CIS-based financial services company. Resulted in favourable award entirely in the clients’ favour.
  • Advising on four concurrent LCIA arbitrations involving claims of around US$600 million in total arising out of breaches of development agreements relating to real estate in Qatar.

  • Following favorable LCIA arbitration, advised on multi-jurisdictional enforcement strategy (in England, BVI and Russia) and settlement, including applications to English High Court. Julia conducted her own advocacy at the arbitration hearing.
  • Advised on an ICC arbitration involving claims of around US$200 million arising out of breaches of an agreement on distribution of assets.
  • Advised on an ICC arbitration involving claims of around US$10 million arising out of breaches of an offtake and marketing agreement in petrochemicals sector in the MENA region.
  • Advised on a complex ICC arbitration involving a claim of around US $100 million over failure to supply feedstock to a petrochemical plant under an agreement between a refinery and a petrochemical plant, including issues over feedstock supply, commissioning, force majeure.
  • Advised on an ICC arbitration involving claims over failure to perform an interconnection agreement between major telecommunications companies in the Balkan states.
  • Defended state companies against an US $400 million claim by a joint venture partner in a mining project (under UNCITRAL Rules) in relation to alleged expropriation.
  • Advised on a dispute over a contract for the hire of an offshore drill rig.
  • Advised on a dispute over a JOA between a state-owned oil company and an independent.
  • Advised on an SCC arbitration involving claims over a breach of a settlement agreement.
  • Advised on a High Court litigation between a UK-listed oil and gas exploration and production company and its former management. 
  • Advised on a High Court litigation between a CIS-based financial institution and its former executives, involving allegations of fraud and mismanagement.
