Pauleen Truong represents clients in a broad range of complex and commercial matters, with a focus on appeals.
Pauleen has a breadth of litigation experience from the risk-assessment and advisory stage through post-judgment and appeal. She has prepared cases for trial, first-chaired arbitrations, managed all aspects of discovery, argued motions, and drafted winning appellate petitions, motions and briefs on the merits. She has deep knowledge of the California civil procedural rules at both the trial and appellate levels. She also maintains an active pro bono practice, including on behalf of victims of domestic violence and asylum seekers.

Prior to joining Pillsbury, Pauleen represented clients in a broad range of complex civil matters, including terrorism judgment collection, contract, mass tort litigation, trademark, professional negligence, right-of-publicity, defamation and tortious interference claims at the trial and appellate level, including in the California Court of Appeal; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, Fourth Circuit, Ninth Circuit, and D.C. Circuit; and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Representative Experience
- Obtained an over $3.1 million award for attorney’s fees and costs following a successful motion for summary judgment in a $65 million real estate dispute involving a complex purchase, lease and lease-back arrangement involving over 90 gas stations and convenience stores; upheld the judgment on appeal.
- Successfully obtained a multimillion-dollar compensatory damages award, plus attorney’s fees and costs, on behalf of a homeowner for breach of contract in a construction defect arbitration.
- Obtained early dismissal of a putative nationwide class action on behalf of an entertainment company, followed by a favorable resolution of appellate proceedings.

- Secured administrative closure of deportation case against an asylum applicant with a misdemeanor arrest record.
- Represented the policyholder in a major construction defect case with damages in excess of $150 million. The insurance recovery aspects are unique in that there are only a few published cases confirming insurance coverage for resulting damage covered as an exception to the “cost of making good” exclusion in a property policy.
- Represented victims of state-sponsored terrorism in seeking turnover of blocked assets of Iran and its agencies and instrumentalities under the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act and Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, including prosecuting and favorably settling claims against a blocked insurance policy and seeking turnover of real property valued around $1 billion.
- Successfully obtained remand of wildfire victims’ lawsuit against a government contractor, despite the Federal Officer Removal Statute, and achieved dismissal of appeal to the Ninth Circuit.
