In its profile of Pillsbury’s nationally ranked Insurance Recovery & Advisory practice, Law360 reported that the Insurance Group earned its place as a 2022 Insurance Group of the Year—specifically highlighting the team’s success in the litigation surrounding the 2021 Champlain Towers South condominium collapse and a major settlement of coal ash-related coverage litigation for Duke Energy.

This latest recognition marks the group’s fifth such award, having previously earned Practice Group of the Year by the publication in 2020, 2017, 2016 and 2010.

The Surfside work was led by partner Joseph Jean, based in New York, who led a multi-office team of litigators to achieve a $185 million recovery that went to assist the victims of the tragic collapse. The Duke Energy litigation was captained by Mark Plumer, based in Washington, DC. As Law360 reported, the settlement offset hundreds of millions of potential rate increases for ratepayers in the Carolinas.

Other significant achievements cited in the profile included brokering a $420 million settlement to resolve an investor class action for drug price-fixing against Teva Pharmaceuticals, a settlement for Ormat Technologies in regard to resolving a claim for more than $150 million in business interruption losses following a volcanic eruption in Hawaii and representing over 100 companies in COVID-10 business interruption cases.
