In a high-profile federal case addressing immigration detention centers in California, Pillsbury represented several advocacy groups seeking to highlight the “tragic state” of immigration detention centers.

Pillsbury filed an amicus brief on behalf of Human Rights Watch, Immigrant Legal Resource Center and Freedom for Immigrants, supporting one of California’s so-called “sanctuary” laws, according to Law360. The U.S. Department of Justice has challenged California’s statutes, alleging that they obstruct federal immigration law enforcement.

In their amicus brief, the advocacy groups supported a California law allowing the state to investigate alleged “inhumane” conditions in immigration detention centers within its borders. The amicus brief describes some of the alleged “inhumane treatment” in California’s immigration detention centers, including sexual abuse and lack of proper medical care.

The advocacy groups are represented pro bono by Pillsbury Litigation associate Elaine Lee in Los Angeles, and partners Kirke M. Hasson and Kevin Fong in San Francisco.
