As part of its annual awards program, WorldECR magazine has recognized Pillsbury as one of the premier law firms advising on global export control and sanctions matters. Pillsbury’s International Trade practice was named 2017 runner-up in the “Sanctions Law Firm of the Year, U.S.A.” competition and earned a “highly commended” distinction in the “Export Controls Law Firm of the Year, Europe” category. Honorees were announced in the publication’s July 2017 issue.

In its write-up of Pillsbury’s U.S. sanctions team, WorldECR noted the firm’s “deep experience advising clients on compliance with economic sanctions and embargoes imposed by the US government under the International Economic Emergency Powers Act and the Trading with the Enemy Act, including sanctions regulations administered by the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) with respect to countries such as Cuba, Iran, Sudan, Syria, Russia, Crimea (Ukraine) and North Korea, as well as terrorists, drug traffickers and other designated entities.” Highlighted engagements included advising Chevron on a wide range of international trade-related matters, including economic sanctions, export controls (including technology transfers, encryption and deemed exports), anti-boycott, and customs matters; representing a European bank in relation to enhancements to US and EU sanctions and anti-money laundering procedures for operations in multiple jurisdictions; and counselling a nuclear power company active in Turkey on US and EU sanctions relating to Russia.

Meanwhile, in connection with the firm’s “Export Controls Law Firm of the Year, Europe” recognition, WorldECR praised the group’s “rich and varied workbook.” Recent engagements representing  a global technology and online services company in two separate UK government export audits (both resulting in no negative findings); updating business-wide ITAR, EAR, and European export control procedures for one of the world’s largest defense companies; and advising a Japanese consortium on EU and Norwegian software and equipment export controls for a major Russian energy project were  cited  to demonstrate the impressive breadth of work undertaken by Pillsbury in this area.

Nationally ranked by Chambers USA, Pillsbury’s International Trade practice is known for its sophisticated work on export controls and sanctions, CFIUS reviews, international trade agreements and FCPA and customs compliance.
