Intellectual Property partner Ranjini Acharya is serving as chairperson for the program. Joining her on the faculty is Shruti Bhutani Arora, partner and leader of the firm’s Consumer Protection team. Shruti will speak on “Chatbots and Digital Replicas: IP, AI, Privacy, and Ethical & Governance Challenges in Synthetic Interactions,” from 9:15 am to 10:15 am PDT. It will also address attorneys’ professional responsibilities when using AI tools and practical strategies for licensing, consent, disclosure and governance.

  • analyze how copyright, trademark and rights of publicity apply to chatbots and digital replicas;
  • explain the duty under California Rule of Professional Conduct 1.1 to remain informed about the risks and benefits associated with AI tools;
  • evaluate risks involving impersonation, deepfakes and the unauthorized use of an individual’s voice or likeness;
  • understand how legal ethics principles and regulatory expectations—including transparency, non-deception and accountability—shape AI deployment; and
  • identify practical strategies to reduce legal, regulatory and reputational risk.
