With the fires still raging in Northern California, the Bay Area and Sacramento Valley legal communities have turned their focus to those who are affected by the conflagrations.

At Pillsbury, attorneys and staff have responded by contributing to gift card, food and clothing drives to help those displaced by the fires, according to Carrie Bonnington, Managing Partner of the Sacramento office and leader of the firm’s Wine, Beer and Spirits Law practice.

“We are really trying to get our arms around how our family, friends, colleagues and clients have been affected,” she said.

Pillsbury is also evaluating how it can help with its clients’ legal needs going forward. Pillsbury’s insurance practice is offering any business affected by the fire an initial evaluation of their policies and advice on how to proceed. With some grapes still on the vine and yet to be harvested, Bonnington said there will likely be coverage issues relating to grape damage, not to mention issues relating to destruction of juice, wine and case goods. Industry members will also likely need help addressing sales and marketing relationships such as those relating to wholesalers and wine club members.

“We’re trying to pool our efforts internally to make sure we can meet all the needs of those affected by the fires,” she said. “I think the biggest impact we’re seeing right now are owners and employees losing homes. I think a lot of my clients find themselves to be in a place with the shifting winds where it’s a minute-by-minute situation. It is a devastating situation.”
