Service
Pillsbury has been leading the way in e-discovery for years. We recognize the many frustrations common to the discovery process, and we have implemented multiple approaches to make it more manageable, efficient and effective for our clients. Employing the latest technologies and techniques, Pillsbury simplifies discovery workflows and provides reliable, single-source solutions in singular and multi-matter engagements alike.
As early as 2010, Pillsbury spearheaded an innovative alliance with vendors across the industry to streamline outsourcing of discovery needs. The firm continues to lead today by insourcing these types of services through our Nashville Legal Services Center.
Drawing on the talents of experienced industry and technology thought leaders, Pillsbury’s Information Law & Electronic Discovery practice has won praise from Chambers USA as “a leading light for scientifically managed e-discovery.” The team administers an advanced infrastructure through the Nashville Legal Services Center and utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to handle operational and legal challenges of large datasets in litigation, internal investigations, due diligence and information governance projects. We leverage sophisticated analytics to understand and manage client data, working alongside in-house technical personnel and legal teams to achieve focused document reviews, continuous quality improvement and economies of scale.

Implementing the Latest Technology While Cutting Costs
Pillsbury has deployed a robust suite of technology and services to coordinate discovery activities at meaningful cost savings for our clients. Our Nashville Legal Services Center has full-time and flex staff attorneys available to perform low-cost project management and first-pass document review. We have licensed the Mindseye e-discovery platform, a powerful data analytic and filtering tool housed within our firewall, allowing us to cull large datasets economically and internally. We have also licensed OpenText’s Axcelerate, a cloud-based document review, analysis and predictive coding platform, which offers scalable, secure and highly targeted productivity advantages over more traditional document review systems. And, in a first for the legal industry, Pillsbury licensed OpenText Magellan, a combination of industry-grade AI and text mining products, which we are deploying in unique configurations to further aid our clients and enhance our capabilities—earning us an “AI Innovator of the Year” award from OpenText in 2019. These systems are staffed by skilled Pillsbury analysts and are available to our clients at competitive rates. We have also formed arrangements with key vendors in other areas of the e-discovery spectrum—forensic collections, machine and human translations, and foreign language review—to streamline the contracting process and ensure our clients receive optimal pricing and exemplary service levels when other providers are needed.
Pillsbury’s integrated approach to discovery frees up litigation case teams to focus on strategy and substantive issues, to reliably access key documents and to promptly develop their case narratives, while our discovery teams address the functions of data collections, processing, hosting, review, productions, and even multi-matter management. This approach gives clients flexibility to centralize discovery operations, advance their litigation objectives, reduce costs and minimize the complications associated with extra vendors and multiple discovery environments.
e-Discovery Guidance and Support

To ensure enhanced accountability and provide bicoastal oversight on Pillsbury’s most document-intensive projects, Rachelle Rennagel, the firm’s senior discovery counsel in our New York office, also routinely oversees large discovery matters. Rachelle has more than a decade of experience leading discovery operations at large firms and has held director-legal positions with well-known discovery service providers.
David and Rachelle provide bicoastal oversight and training to review teams, and they remain involved at a high level in targeting and quality-assurance aspects, utilizing the Axcelerate platform and directing the focus of review efforts.
Our investments in technology and resources are designed to support consistent workflows and the reuse of client data and work product. These tools let us weed out and avoid the costly review of nonresponsive data, and we are able to perform our assignments effectively, in a defensible, quality-controlled manner, with consistent results and reliable cost estimates.
We also provide proactive guidance on information governance, strategic electronic discovery use, cybersecurity, privacy and compliance, as well as assist with incident response and risk mitigation. We have extensive experience with:
