Barry Burgdorf, a Former University of Texas System GC, Joins Rapidly Growing Austin Office
AUSTIN – Today, Pillsbury announced the arrival of corporate and life sciences attorney Barry Burgdorf to its Austin office.
Burgdorf, who joins the firm as special counsel, was previously the Chief Operating Officer at Remeditex Ventures, a $300 million biotech venture capital firm. He also served as the longtime General Counsel for the University of Texas System and was a corporate, technology partner at Vinson & Elkins.
“Barry builds on our substantial biotech practice, and he supercharges our education practice,” said Andrew Strong, a Pillsbury partner and former GC of Texas A&M University. “With the connections between academia and biotech growing, he helps us build on those relationships, particularly as they commercialize their inventions.”
Burgdorf worked with Remeditex from 2015 to 2017, and was the Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel at VuComp from 2013 to 2015. He was Vice Chancellor and General Counsel for the University of Texas System in Austin from 2005 to 2013, where he oversaw the legal needs of nine universities and six health institutions, and a legal staff of 36 attorneys. Among other roles, he was of counsel and a partner at Vinson & Elkins from 1998 to 2005 and was Samsung Austin Semiconductor’s first General Counsel from 1996 to 1998. He earned his law degree at the University of Texas School of Law and has an MBA from Southern Methodist University.
“When I was at UT, I worked closely with Andrew, who was my counterpart at Texas A&M,” Burgdorf noted. “Once I became available, Andrew invited me to join him and help strengthen the firm’s life science, technology and education practices. With Pillsbury on a growth trajectory in Texas, I jumped at the offer, and I look forward to building my practice alongside this deep and talented team.”
Ed Cavazos, managing partner of the Austin office, added: “We are excited about the rapid growth of our office here in Austin, and in particular, the addition of Barry to our corporate, technology practice. With his extensive business ties locally, he is well known in Austin and Texas generally, and he brings a sterling reputation to our busy team.”
